What Makes a Good School Notebook? 7 Things Most Buyers Don’t Notice

When buying school notebooks, most people compare the basics first: paper GSM, number of pages, size, ruling and price. These are important, but they don't tell you everything about the quality of a notebook.

Two notebooks with almost the same specifications can feel quite different when you actually start using them. The difference is usually in smaller details that are easy to miss when looking at a quotation or even a sample for the first time.

Here are seven things you should look at when checking the quality of a school notebook.

1. GSM is not the only measure of paper quality

GSM tells you the weight of the paper, but it shouldn't be the only thing you use to judge it.

Paper of the same GSM can vary in smoothness, opacity, stiffness and shade. One of the easiest ways to compare two papers is simply to write on them.

Try a regular ballpoint and gel pen and check the other side of the page. If the writing shows through too much, using both sides of the sheet can become uncomfortable.

This is particularly important for school notebooks, where almost every page is normally written on from both sides.

2. Check whether the ruling stays consistent

Whether you are buying single-line, four-line, square or another type of notebook, don't check only the first few pages.

Flip through the notebook and open it at different places. The ruling should remain consistent throughout. Look at the spacing between lines, margins, alignment and darkness of the ruling.

It is a small detail, but inconsistent ruling becomes quite noticeable during regular use.

3. Look at the notebook when it is closed

This takes only a few seconds and can tell you quite a lot about the finishing.

Close the notebook and look at the edges from the top and sides. The pages should be cut evenly and sit neatly together.

If sheets are sticking out or the edges look noticeably uneven, the notebook hasn't been finished as cleanly as it could have been.

This becomes even more important with bulk orders because small inconsistencies are much easier to notice when hundreds or thousands of the same notebook are supplied together.

4. Open the notebook properly before judging the binding

Binding is difficult to judge just by looking at a new notebook.

Open it from different sections, turn the pages and see how the notebook behaves. The pages should remain properly secured without becoming loose during normal handling.

School notebooks go through a lot. They are opened several times a day, carried around in bags and used continuously for months. A binding that looks fine initially still needs to hold up to regular use.

5. Pay attention to the cover alignment

This matters even more when notebooks are being customized for a school or institution.

A cover may contain a school logo, name, photograph, pattern or other artwork. These elements should remain properly positioned once the notebook has been printed, cut and finished.

Logos or text placed too close to the cutting edge can make the finished cover look poorly aligned. This is also why proper bleed and safe margins should be kept while preparing cover artwork.

A good design can lose a lot of its impact if the final cutting and alignment are not clean.

6. Consistency matters more in a bulk order

A good sample is obviously important, but bulk buyers should think beyond the sample.

If you are ordering 10,000, 20,000 or even more notebooks, the paper, ruling, cutting, printing and binding need to remain consistent throughout the production run.

This is one of the biggest differences between buying a few notebooks from a stationery shop and procuring notebooks for an entire school or institution.

At that scale, even a small inconsistency repeated across the order can become a much bigger issue.

7. Look at the notebook as a whole

There isn't one specification that automatically makes a notebook good.

Higher GSM doesn't help if the binding is poor. A well-designed cover doesn't make up for uneven cutting. Good paper can still result in an average notebook if the ruling and finishing aren't consistent.

A good school notebook is a combination of good paper, clean ruling, proper binding, accurate cutting, well-printed covers and consistent production.

The easiest way to judge one is to actually use the sample for a few minutes. Write on a couple of pages, open it from different sections, look at the edges and check the printing closely.

You will usually learn more from doing this than you will from simply comparing specifications on two quotations.
